North-east Florida records roughly 68 thunderstorm days a year, and the county has sat through multi-day outages after Matthew in 2016, Irma in 2017 and Helene in 2024. A modern cooking suite is mostly electronics: a control board, a relay board, a spark module, an induction inverter. Those are what a surge reaches first, and they are the most expensive components in the appliance.

Surge damage is frequently partial rather than total. A board that survives an event looking normal has lost margin, and it fails properly weeks later on an ordinary evening with no storm in sight — which is why the owner rarely connects the two. An appliance that changed behaviour on the afternoon of a storm and never quite recovered is a fault to measure, not a glitch to wait out.

We check the supply before we suspect the board: both legs of a 240-volt feed, the breaker itself, the connections behind the appliance, then thermal cutouts, then the control. A board is the last thing on that list because it is the most expensive and the least often the actual cause.
